How to Come Up With a Good Facebook Ad Headline

How to Come Up With a Good Facebook Ad Headline

Although with Facebook advertising, what people will look at first is the visual element of the ad and not necessarily the Facebook copy, it is still very important to put time and effort into crafting attention grabbing headlines, as it’s the second most important element of an ad.

A Facebook ad headline and Facebook copy in general is what people will read once the visual of the ad has captured their attention.

A Facebook ad headline and Facebook copy in general should have certain elements of surprise, curiosity, education, intrigue or be benefit-driven. Such as the Facebook ad headline we used to capture leads using a free mini video series on intermittent fasting.

The Facebook ad headline, which appears below the image and the website URL was “Free Intermittent Fasting Mini-Course For Fat Loss”. The benefit is that it’s free and it will help people lose fat. If you can underline multiple benefits when headline copywriting, it’s better.

We could have said “Intermittent Fasting Mini-Course For Fat Loss” and removed the fact it was free, but that would have not captured as many people’s attention as when we added the word “free”.

We could have kept the word “free” and removed “for fat loss”, to make the headline “Free Intermittent Fasting Mini-Course” but since people who are interested in intermittent fasting usually are interested in it because of the fat loss benefits, it was important to include “fat loss” in the headline.

With headline copywriting, you’ll have to remember Facebook’s policy. Facebook won’t approve ads that make big income claims such as “Make 200% returns with Forex” and especially when you specify a certain time frame such as “within 10 days”.

Facebook also won’t approve ads where your audience is criticised or described in an unflattering way, such as “How you can go from fat to fit in 30 days”. Here, you’re calling your audience “fat” which Facebook is unlikely to approve of.

The same applies in the anti-ageing industry for example, if you say in your headline or anywhere in your ad for that matter, something like “Make your wrinkles disappear the fast and easy way”, your ad will likely be disapproved.

Now that you know what to avoid, let’s look at how you can come up with catchy headlines.

The first step with headline copywriting is knowing your audience. When you know the fears, concerns, problems, aspirations, hopes and dreams of your audience, then it will become easier to come up with a headline that captures their attention.

So before headline writing, the first step is spending a few minutes at least to research your audience. The most accurate way to find out information about your audience is to survey them.

If they belong to a Facebook group for example or if you have a mailing list, you could simply ask them to answer a question. Let’s say you were planning to advertise an intermittent fasting meal plan, you could ask any of the following questions:

  • What is your number 1 question about intermittent fasting?
  • What is your biggest concern when it comes to intermittent fasting?
  • What is the main reason you’ve done intermittent fasting or are thinking of doing intermittent fasting?
  • What would stop you from doing intermittent fasting?

By really getting into the head of your target audience and having an understanding of their desires and pain points, headline writing becomes easier because you will be able to speak directly to them.

There are many ways you can get ideas for creating the perfect, attention grabbing headlines for your audience.

The first way is by simply conducting a search on Google on your topic. When you do, you’ll see articles ranking on the first page of Google. Chances are, they’re ranking because they’re quite popular. Start listing all the advertising headlines used that can be modelled for your offer.

For example, should you be looking for golf-related catchy headlines, because you’re advertising a free report on the 10 worst golf swing mistakes to avoid, type in Google’s search engine “golf mistakes”.

When you do, Google will not only list all the most popular videos and articles ranking for these keywords, it will also suggest other keywords for you, that you might want to also perform a search for. For example, when typing “golf swing mistakes”, Google also suggested the keywords “golf swing mistakes video” and “worst golf swing mistakes”.

Then, simply go through the search results and start creating a list of attention grabbing headlines you could model.

The other way to find inspiration for Facebook ad copy and ad headlines, is through Facebook itself. Start creating a folder with screenshots of ads that caught your attention so you can refer back to them as templates for your ads and advertising headlines.

If you’re advertising a golf related offer, start liking Golf related pages, so you’re more likely to start seeing Golf related ads in your newsfeed. Alternatively, you can use a tool such as AdSpy which allows you to look for Facebook ads using any keyword.

Simply type your keywords in their search engine, and you will see all the ads that match your search criteria. You can filter your search even further by adding other search criteria, or displaying ads according to their popularity.

Another way to collect ideas for your Facebook ad copy and ad headlines, is by performing a search on Youtube the same way you performed a search on Google. Simply type in your keyword in Youtube’s search engine and you will see all the relevant videos.

Look for videos that have the most views, because it will give you an indication of what your target audience is most interested in. Then, notice the titles of the videos. Video titles can give you plenty of ideas for your Facebook advertising headlines.

Lastly, a useful habit to adopt before headline writing, is performing a search on Amazon the same way you performed a search on Youtube and Google. When you do, you will be able to see all the books that are relevant to your keywords.

Check the books that have the most positive reviews as this will give you a clear indication of what caught your audience’s attention the most. Book titles and book subtitles can become great templates for your own catchy headlines or at the very least, give you good ideas and inspiration.

If you want to go a step further in the research process, and try to get in the head of your audience even more, you can look at book reviews or Youtube comments.

Because it there that your target audience express their wants, needs, desires, hopes, and opinions which can be very useful information for your ad headlines and Facebook ad copy in general.
